Medieval Cracow is coming up from under the earth.

At the beginning it suppose to be a surface replacement, but archaeologists used an unusual situation and for one year the Main Market in Cracow became a great building site.
It’s the biggest excavation in Europe, began in August 2005 and it should be finished in July 2006.

Archaeologists succeeded in climbing about 5 m down the present-day level. At the beginning there were mixed XIX century stratums, the earliest ones were mixed too. Only Medieval stratums remained unchanged. Uncovering next old levels researchers reached XI century and there was a great surprise for them – a big cemetery.
They uncovered about 40 burials. The dead were buried in wood coffins or shrouds. Their heads were turned to the West or East. Most of the dead are men. According to Krzysztof Kacznowski (Anthropology department of Jagiellonian University) – the buried people came here from the South and the East, becouse their scullps and scullps of Cracow people from this period are different. Archaeologists have been researching the discovery. Only after precise investigation they’ll be able to tell us more about medieval Cracow inhabitants’ life and diet.
In XII century there was a settlement on the cemetery area. Previous researches exposed buildings from this period. The last excavations enriched our knowledge about medieval Cracow buildings.
The Cracow destiny was changed in 1257 when Boleslaw Shy gave to Cracow a foundation charter, according to the Magdeburg law. First active inhabitants – mediavel investors were people from Slask. The suvereign signed the location agreement with them. They were obliged to bring in new settlers, make market stalls and form the court. When mediavel investors fulfiled all obligations under the agreement, they probably sold the town and reinvested received capital in other same type ventures. After the reorganization, a pace of life on the Main Market set to get faster. The wooden streets with pine or oak kerbs tell us about it. Their age was defined by dr Marek Krapiec (Mining and Metallurgicall Academy). He made analyses of wooden levels. - Some of the kerbs came from 1283, other from 1330. – says Marek Krapiec.
