Puppet and mask show theater “Groteska” has an over fifty years tradition. It was founded by Zofia and Wladyslaw Jarema in 1945 and at the beginning it was a puppet show for children, but sometimes there were mask shows for adults.
We can divide “Groteska” theater history into three periods. Every period depends on the theater directors activity.
A contemporary poetry and political metaphor predominated in the theater art under Zofia Jarema management and Konsatanty Ildefons Galczynski and Slawomir Mrozek patronage.
In 1975, Freda Leniewicz – a new director opened a new face of “Groteska” – theater for children. Classic children literature: Snow Queen, Cinderella, Snow Wight or Alice in Wonderland appeared in theater’s repertoire. Performances for adult took place too, but they were of marginal importance.
The third period is the Jan Polewka management – the artist, who was aware of theater magic.
In his artistic visions he was using a mask of "Commedia dell'Arte", Far East Culture and Spanish art. All these features were appearing in literary texts.
Since 1998 the theater has been doing under Adolf Weltschek management – Jan Polewka activity’s continuator. He also broadened the programme. He follows the idea of three paths: Fiary-tale, Fable and Myth and directs performances to children and young people.
Booking office: Mon – Fri from 8.00 till 12.00 and 15.00-17.00, or an hour before a performance.
